Types of Refractometers

  • Optical Refractometers: These are analog instruments that require a few drops of liquid placed on a measuring prism. Light enters the sample and strikes the interface between the liquid and the prism. This creates a distinct "shadow line" on an internal scale visible through an eyepiece. 
  • Digital Refractometers: These use an internal light source and electronic sensors to provide fast, precise digital readings, reducing the potential for human error associated with reading a manual scale. Many feature Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for greater accuracy.
